School Council
A school council is a group of students who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and to improve their school.
What does it do?
A school council does a number of things:
- The school council meets – with a teacher present – to discuss issues and problems. These may include school lunches, behaviour or ideas for fundraising events
- They then feed back to their classes
- Members of the school council will be responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed, such as organising activities,
What jobs are there?
Each year, every class will elect 2 representatives to be members of the school council.
The council will then meet regularly to discuss ideas and concerns as raised by their class. Jobs from these meetings will then be delegated to particular children, based on their own interest in the project.
What are our aims?
Our school council is one that represents the views of all students and gets things done.
We strive to have:-
- Regular meetings
- A council that is not too big
- Good communication between representatives and their class
- Training for school council members
- Smaller groups (subcommittees) working on specific events or issues
- A budget (however small)
- Annual evaluations
In the past, the School Council have been involved in interviewing the Headteacher when she was employed, they vote on the selection of the school charity and helped with the organisation of the behaviour policy. They also helped organise Sports Relief and Children in Need for the school.
What are we working on this year?
- Nurture UK - the children have had meetings with Miss Hanks and Mrs Challoner this year to discuss the 6 principles of nurture. Together, they've been thinking about how to embed these principles in our school to make it a happy, safe and nurturing place for all of our children.
- Kindness Project - a big focus for our council across the first part of the year has been launching our kindness project. Across February 2025, we will be hosting a Kindness Month with a special Kindness Week taking place from Monday 10th February to Friday 14th February.
Previous projects:
The Big Dig
On a cold and wet Saturday in November, parent and children volunteers came to the school early to begin work on our new Reflection Garden.
We managed to mark out and dig several new planter areas, as well as a brand new hole for a brand new pond.
We also managed to clear much of the rubbish and old wood away from the garden area so that we can begin planting in the spring.
The Mayor of Ashford, Jenny Webb, even turned up with a donation of £100 for the garden as well!
Thank you and well done to all our volunteers.
